Speedwell
Also known as Bird's eye, Cat's eye, Eye of the child Jesus, Farewell, Goodbye. In Ireland it was fastened to clothing to bring good luck to travellers. The references to eyes are understandable on account of the tiny blue flowers but why it is thought to speed the traveller on their journey is not clear. In the 18th century tea - which again was especially beneficial to travellers - was made from dried speedwell leaves.
Whatever the reason the baby blue flowers are a cheering Spring sight.
