DAY SIX
Arrived in Palma de Mallorca this morning. Overcast, but hey - it wasn’t raining. We had to report for a RAT (Rapid Antogen Test) at 8am - first such thing, though our butler, when he can find us, checks our temperatures each day.
Right on the pier were 10 buses ready for the trips. And some smaller vehicles for private trips. We had a trip to a couple of the main historic attractions in the town - first of all the circular castle on the hill, which used to be a prison. Lots of steps up, but an incredible building, with a view out over the island.
Then we were taken into town to visit the cathedral (which took 400 years to build). It was quite spectacular, and very crowded. Our guide’s English wasn’t very good - much better than my Spanish, of course - but it was a Spanish speaker who complained about her to me. The guide was quite hard to understand, and actually, she never ever stopped talking, explaining, giving dates historical facts etc. AND she always took off ahead in the crowds, crossing roads, going round corners, not stopping to check for stragglers (moi).
What made the whole trip a LOT of fun, despite the fast pace, and many steps, was meeting a group of women, one of them quite elderly. I asked them where they were from… PERU! But they were part Irish, too. They are a family with two elder sisters (one had quite bad asthma and had left her puffer on the bus) and (at least) two daughters/nieces - younger women who kept joining them and wandering off. And what fun they were! When we were in the cathedral looking at all the GOLD statues etc, and in a stage whisper they reminded me that ‘They STOLE it from us. All of it!’
Back to the boat for (a light) lunch and then I had a snooze, while JR did a load of washing and went to the gym!
This evening we had the most delicious pizza - puttanesca, which you’d never see in Pizza Express. Then to the cafe for little chocolate treats and coffees. The boutique was open and we ‘happened’ to wander in. The most amazing handbags! A pair of sunglasses was bought, though there could have been a LOT more damage done to the bank card!
An early start tomorrow, so NO dancing this evening.
