Anti-Air War Memorial

The Anti-Air War Memorial, which was commissioned by Sylvia Pankhurst and sculpted by Eric Benfield in 1935, stood outside her ‘Red Cottage’ off the High Road, Woodford Green.

The ‘Red Cottage’ was demolished in 1939, and replaced by four houses, where it was clearly visible on an area of green between them and the High Road. Those four houses were in turn demolished in 2009 and replaced by a new development of apartments called Highbeam House. The memorial was retained by the developers, but is now becoming partly hidden by the surrounding greenery. It was restored in 2014 to coincide with World Disarmament Day.

The extras show the explanatory plaque on the railings, and another shot to show context.
