Rainy Day in Lucca
The rain did not slow us down today, but the weather dictated that we walk instead of bike. The Luccheses, however, keep riding holding umbrellas, a skill we have yet to acquire. A perfect museum day. We visited the National Museum in Villa Guinigi, a few blocks from our apartment. The home of Paolo Guinigi, Lord of Lucca 1400-1430, now houses art & artifacts from Lucca from the ancient Etruscans to the 18th century. (See extra photos) 1) The 15th century wood inlays are incredible masterpieces, depicting scenes from Lucca. Mike says they were an inspiration for M. C. Escher. The religious art is stunning with underlying messages, evoking fear and terror or joy. 2) The serpent with the horned woman’s head is particularly revolting while Mary conceives immaculately. 3) The naked boy and puppy playing is cute and innocent while the Madonna ascends to heaven. 4) Where else but in Italy is gelato considered and art form comparable to Caravaggio? You can see that we are across the street from the walls of Lucca.
