Hablitzia Tamnoides

a climber with edible spinach type leaves. John read a book, Around the world in 80 plants, a couple years ago and was intrigued by the number of salad plants the author Stephen Barstow could grow in Norway during the winter months without using heat. John sent for the seeds, planted them about this time last year ago, starting off in the polytunnel, later outside and back in to overwinter. He recently transferred each one outside, with a large plastic container surrounding it to fend off any Hablitzia loving creatures, and now we sit with fingers crossed. The young shoots can be eaten in early spring, just hope we remember.

(Hablitzia seeds need a period of cold to germinate. Sow outside in a cold frame over the winter or sow in spring and place in the fridge for 10 days to trigger germination).
