Saturday seems to have become a day for chasing butterflies but why not chase the butterfly's name too? In latin this pretty lepidoptera with wings that look as if they are on fire when the sun shines on them is called Polyonia c-album, which sounds a bit funny but has got a logic explanation (the latin names always do). The first part means many-angles in latin, referring to the angular wings, and in the second part the c represents the third letter of the greek alphabet (gamma) and album means white, referring to the single white marking on the otherwise wood-like underwing (extra). The common english name is Comma, again derived from the white marking on the underwing. You probably knew that already but I'm writing it so that I will remember.
