The little bridge at Stow is one of only three packhorse bridges in Scotland with a low parapet to allow horses with packs to cross in safety. It is sometime known as the Subscription Bridge because it was constructed by public subscription around 1654-5 and then restored in 2002. There are three arches with the smaller two positioned to carry travellers over a flooded field while the pointed edge on the largest pier reduces the flow of the Gala Water when there is a risk of flooding.
