Gallimaufry
"a medley, hash, hodge-podge," 1550s, from French galimafrée "hash, ragout, dish made of odds and ends," from Old French galimafree, calimafree "sauce made of mustard, ginger, and vinegar; a stew of carp" (14c.), which is of unknown origin. Perhaps from Old French galer "to make merry, live well" (see gallant) + Old North French mafrer "to eat much," from Middle Dutch maffelen [Klein]. Weekley sees in the second element the proper name Maufré. Hence, figuratively, "any inconsistent or absurd medley."
Original entry edited into Mono for the challenge - I couldn't pass up the chance to use one of my favourite words. I always thought it was Scottish, but apparently not. I think "inconsistent and absurb" is pretty close to my "style".
We were up at the crack of dawn in order to persuade coerce (I was going to say man-handle, but that's not appropriate for a cat, is it) Douggie into his carrier. He had an early appointment at the vet, and wasn't allowed to have any breakfast just in case ...
He was less than impressed and yowled for the twenty minutes it took to drive there. The Covid regime is still being observed so he was handed in at the door and we left ...
We cheered ourselves up with breakfast at a cafe in Earlston called Apples for Jam. There were no apples to be seen, but I liked their shelves decorated with paper lampshades and pots of ferns. Can you spot the headless blipper? I wasn't being coy, just didn't notice when I took the picture.
We had just got back to Jed when the vet rang to say that Douggie is once again in rude good health - the inflammation has gone and the bladder stones are much reduced in size. Not further action needed, not even the special diet. So we went and got him and he had a very hearty lunch, and appears to have forgiven us for the indignities he suffered this morning.
Further edit to remove the MM tag - it's Tuesday today ... oh dear ......
