moreton bay fig

A member of the Ficus family, this whopper thrives in Kings Park and would surely be a cathedral amongst trees with those buttress roots.
There again, having been recently snorkelling in warm waters, maybe an octopussy reference may be in order too.

They are actually strangler figs,in which seed germination takes place in the canopy of the host tree and when the roots touch ground they enlarge, kill the host and become free standing (sounds rather like our politicians.) They do produce a fig like fruit (many examples well squished underfoot and tasting dreadful) and are only pollinated by fig wasps and the fig wasp can only reproduce in fig flowers.

With those roots, not a handy garden plant as they may grow to 60m and imagine those roots and house pipes.
The garden centre ficus in a pot for the verandah a much safer, but much less dramatic, option.
