Between fen and mountains

Rocks, ruins and water

Today’s walk took us up a remote valley above Py. We followed a rocky path climbing 450 m before dropping down to the fast flowing stream. Along the way there were several ruined and abandoned dwellings. I am always amazed at the ingenuity and application of our ancestors in these valleys. Some of the houses, walls and terracing, mostly constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries are remote and a long way from the village. They must have taken generations to build, often with the possibility of exploiting only a small piece of land which had to be cleared of rocks and boulders before it was possible to cultivate anything.
