Safe house
I have no idea how Kate was able to influence where we travelled to, any more than I knew how Mr Smith had somehow directed me to the corridor when I'd escaped from the facility.
I supposed you could just add it to the ever-growing list headed 'things I don't understand'.
However it worked, Kate's "Yes!" when we arrived told me it was where she'd been intending to go. We appeared to be somewhere in the middle of a housing estate.
"So this is the place, then?" I asked. "Where exactly are we?"
"Outskirts of Coventry," she replied. "Place belongs to a friend of mine from Uni."
"Right. Er, won't she be a bit surprised when you turn up - I mean, when we turn up - out of the blue?"
"To be honest, she probably wouldn't be. But the thing is, she's away right now, in the States. And her neighbour always has a spare key: when you lock yourself out as often as Sarah does, well..."
"But how do you know they won't find us here?"
Kate looked thoughtful for a moment. "The truth? I'm not sure they won't find us here, Alan. I'm just trying to make it difficult. Thing is, the organisation isn't really set up for a manhunt - although they've got connections, they're not the police.
"There's at least a couple of hundred miles between us and them, for one thing. This is about the most ordinary, unremarkable place I can think of, in an unremarkable city, in an unremarkable part of the country."
"Hmmm... maybe it's the first place they'll look."
She sighed. "Maybe it is," she said. "But what are you worried about? As soon as we see them, you can just zoom us out of there, can't you? Now, let's get that key. I could murder a cup of tea."
"Orange pekoe?" The words were out before I could stop them. "I'm sorry," I said.
"Yeah, me too. Now let's get inside, eh?" she replied, wearily.
