Maruia...

………………………………Falls, NZ

Today we made our way from home in Motueka to the alpine village of Hanmer Springs, home of a popular thermal complex.

First stop was at Maruia Falls, South of Murchison. See main photo and first two extra.
The Murchison earthquake of 1929 produced a landslide which diverted the Maruia River further west, forcing it to cut a new channel over an old river bank. Once the river had eroded the gravels, the bank became the Maruia Falls. Immediatley after the earthquake the falls were only about a metre high. After a year, the gravels downstream had been eroded and the water fell 5 metres. By 1986, it had dropped about 10 metres. (Teara.govt.NZ)

Second stop was at the summit of the Lewis Pass and the small tarn which is at the northern end of the St James Walkway. See third extra.

The historic Ferry Bridge crosses the Waiau River providing access to the alpine spar town of Hanmer Springs. See the last two extra photos.

Your comments, stars and hearts for yesterday’s find behind our garden shed is very much appreciated. Thank you.
