Bitter day on Tonlagee

'twas a bitter wind as we ascended Tonlagee (Tóin le Gaoith in Irish, and indeed it was windy), from Glenmacnass.  The ground was partly frozen from last night's frost  and this made the Barnacullian bog between Tonlagee (816m) and Mullaghcleevaun (847m) less messy to negotiate than usual. Barnacullian is perhaps the boggiest place in the whole of the Wicklow bog, but it wasn't quite hard enough to stop us sinking in a bit. We were surprised to find a large number of heavy woven polythene bags full of soil and bits of heather scattered around the bog, obviously dropped by helicopter.  It looked as though they might be intending to re-seed the whole bog, but why?
