A Day In The Life

wtf

“Where’s the fish?” • With ice covering most of the Kennebec River local Smelt Camp Operators have their Ice Fishing Shanties setup on the ice for rent. People pay by the hour to fish this tidal river for rainbow smelt and tomcod. In our general area we know of three businesses but there are others doing the same north and south of us • Private fisherman with access to the river have their own shacks setup to fish in, like the one pictured here. Some rent out their single camp to make a little side money • It’s a hobby many here enjoy and look forward to during the winter, and it’s as much a social event as it is a fishing one. Often there’s a cooler of beer not far from the icy hole • In case you’re wondering, this is not something we’ve ever experienced… (1) we don’t eat fish; (2) it’s a tidal river so the ice actually moves up and down, (3) there’s the frequent sound of ice cracking, something I would find unsettling when standing or sitting on said ice, and (4) the credibility and reliability of said proprietors are questionable, LoL! I could tell you stories to support this claim, but let’s save them for another day! • Here fishy, fishy :)
