Petworth

Sixteen miles down the A272 is Petworth house and although I’d walked in the grounds I’d never been in.  Quite a few others had the same idea hence the mask.  It’s best know for its paintings of which there are many. You can tell the good ones before you look because they are cleaned and better lit.  A lot of Turners of course, as he stayed there for long periods and painted for the house, but some random gems, a Titian, a Bosch and some wonderful Van Dyke portraits, all those foxy men and knowing women.   It’s a funny house, much less grand inside than I thought it would be.

Stopped off at Cowdray for lunch and a walk with the dog who was a bit miffed at having been left in the car.  You can walk the dog in the acres of parkland but it was that or lunch….
