1- 3 Bridge Street
There are many Listed buildings in Appleby and I have probably blipped some of them at one time or another. I just thought it might be an idea to record them in some order as an occasional bit of research.
The Kings Head is the first building of note as you go over the bridge and enter the town. It was built in the 18th century and in 1746 was referred to as a ‘new inn’. It was once an establishment of some consequence, as it was here that town officials would assemble for various celebrations and hold banquets for the visiting Assize Judges.
It was also an important coaching inn, as can be seen by the entrance to the coach house at the far end of this photo. There is a tethering ring still attached to the wall by the door, but quite what one would tether there I don’t know.
It is still a public house, but does look in need of a bit of care and attention. Above it are not hotel rooms, but flats. The whole lot was up for sale a while back, maybe it still is, and that might account for the sorry state it is in.
