Turn Turn Turn

Given that you can classify something as an antique when it reaches 100 years old, these two items are now halfway there as I made them at school fifty years ago. Can’t imagine them appearing on a 2072 edition of Antiques Roadshow though!
One of the “perks” of moving to senior school was that we were finally allowed to have a go at woodturning and use the lathe in woodwork classes. I elected to make a lamp and a bowl but neither turned out quite as planned. The bowl is a mere 7” in diameter, but started out almost twice that size. Unfortunately, as it was being turned down, the chisel hit a knot in the wood which knocked a whole corner off. So my planned fruit bowl had to become a small trinket dish!
The lamp should have been a lot better finished, but I ran out of time. The bulb holder is slightly askew, as the top is not level, and the finish leaves a lot to be desired because it wasn’t properly sanded before varnishing. But both items were gratefully received by my proud(?) parents and put on display in the house.
Where they remained until the house was sold in 2020 and, as mum did not want to take them with her when she moved in with my sister, I decided to reclaim them and brought them back to Kendal. The bowl just required a quick clean and is now used to hold the various pills we have to take on a daily basis!
I rewired the light, but using very cheap fittings, so it was no surprise that the bulb holder broke off earlier this year. As it is the ideal size for our study/second bedroom, I bought a new - more robust - lamp holder and a slightly longer piece of flex. Mrs C had already spotted a shade to match the new decor and thus the lamp was once again reborn.
Hopefully we will get many more years use out of both items, though I don’t envisage my nephew or niece fighting over who is going to inherit these fine, hand crafted objets d’art in the future. Unless I can persuade them to hand them down from generation to generation until they achieve “family heirloom” status!
