Ignorance and Conscientious Stupidity
I pass this home every day on my to work. April 4, this Confederate flag came out. The same day that marked the 45th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The legal protections of the First Amendment are broad and remain a critical, and controversial, part of American jurisprudence. Despite the message this symbol of racism & hatred sends, our society protects the right to express it.
I know the intended effect this flag is supposed to have. When I see it, I pause and reflect on Dr. King's extraordinary life and his tireless work to bend the arc of justice and equality. He called on us to assume the best in each other rather than the worst, and challenge one another in ways that heal rather than wound.
"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant."
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
His work is not complete.
