S-S-S-Single Bed

Well, it’s described as a small double, but I reckon “large single” would be more apt, especially as it’s unlikely there will ever be more than one person sleeping in it.
The problem with living in a two bedroom bungalow is that you either have computers and office stuff in the living room - which is awkward if you’re trying to work and someone else wants to watch the telly - or you turn the second bedroom into a study. Which then means that any spare bed is likely to be a compromise.
When we moved here, we had a full sized double bed in the second bedroom and a small desk in the corner of the lounge. But priorities changed and a bigger desk (plus extra storage) was installed in what was now officially a “study”. Just in case an extra bed was needed, a small sofa bed was squeezed in as well. Within a few weeks, that had turned into a dumping ground and if you wanted to sleep there it was a case of either shifting everything off, then finding a quilt and pillow. Either that or just trying to kip as best as you could in an armchair. Neither ideal, if you were feeling under the weather.
So when it came to all the work being done on the house, a better solution was required. After discounting a house move or building an extension (to get an extra room) we came across a piece of furniture called a Study Bed. Not cheap, but it enabled us to both have our computers permanently set up and - at the same time - a spare bed ready to swing into action in seconds. Basically, release two catches and the bed swings down ready to get into straight away. But all the stuff on the desk stays in place and just tucks away underneath, without the need to clear anything away. Reverting back to a desk is just as simple and quick.
It is a big chunk of furniture, but it does do everything we want, and we get to stay in the house we really love. It’s getting a lot of use as a desk, but I do wonder when it will be used as a bed. Not likely to be having visitors any time soon in these covid times, and we both want to remain healthy so are unlikely to need a sick bed. Still, nice to know it’s instantly available if it is required.
