George Square Skyline, Glasgow
Today the sun was well and truly out. It was late afternoon and people were sitting enjoying the robust fresh air in George Square, but well wrapped up against the north wind. There were lots of things to photograph, but I decided to home in on this statue of the former British Liberal statesman William Gladstone. (George Square has a lot of statues!) He was known by his supporters as "The People's William" or the "G.O.M." ("Grand Old Man") as he was 84 when he resigned as Prime Minister in 1894.
I spotted the seagull perched atop his head. It looked very happy and pleased with itself up there surveying the scene. I liked the juxtaposition of the statue with the towers of the City Chambers and the modern lighting arrangement. The whole scene lent itself to a little stylised treatment with the artistic cut-out filter. This emphasised the fluffy clouds and gave a simplicity to the edges of the stonework.
