Uniquely Ours

Cloudy with some rain, high of 61 deg F. We are under a winter storm warning with up to eight inches of snow predicted tonight/tomorrow. Crazy weather. Hubby got up early and went to the church hall to help with the Knights’ breakfast, collecting donations, not working with the food. He wore a mask. I moseyed out of bed, made coffee and decluttered a bit. Things still look pretty neat from Christmas. We had one load of clothes to do. I had frozen cookies for two friends and Becky picked them up this morning. Hubby brought me breakfast and I went to my daughter’s to finish my blip. Folks have inquired about my mention of stuffed ham. As far as I know, this dish is unique to our county although folks have taken recipes with them when they move away. I described it somewhat in the comments area of yesterday’s blip. There are legends about its origin and I included links to some of the stories. I happened to have some ham that my mother made (on the right) and my oldest daughter had some from a market in the northern part of the county. You can see there is a difference. Momma usually adds a bit more kale to hers but she did not have any the day she made her stuffed ham. Her handwritten recipe is included on the right of my blip. If you look at the picture on full screen, I’m sure you can see red pepper flakes in the north county stuffing. My tongue is still burning from tasting it earlier. I really do not like it that hot. I hope you can open the links for more recipes and history of this delicacy from our beloved St. Mary’s County. You will also get a better idea of what it looks like pre-sliced.

I am looking forward to a sandwich for dinner. Hubby picked up our groceries and I put them away. Otherwise, it’s been another laid back day. Thanks for dropping by and leaving generous stars and comments. Sounds like my youngest daughter is still having the headaches. Others are ready to go back to school or work. Guess we’ll see what the weather brings. “Food for us comes from our relatives, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. It has relationships.” – Winona LaDuke
