New Garden
Work on our new garden starts this week, with a skip arriving on Tuesday and the Designer/Contractor starting on Wednesday. This is it at the moment; just the lumpy grass laid by the builders and a couple of paths which are in the wrong place anyway. It’s an odd shape; as you can see, it wraps around the back and side of the house but all the walls and fences run off at angles. I’m no gardener myself but I like to see a nice garden so our brief to the designer was that it had to be low maintenance, have lots of year round colour, somewhere sheltered to sit out, have some ‘architectural’ plants, hide the garage wall and bins, and have a water feature. The plan he came up with certainly fulfilled the brief; due to the odd shape it is based around three circles. Two will form a lawn at the back while the third will be a seating area at the side, under a circular pergola. There will be a couple of trees to shield the views from neighbouring properties, and as soon as he saw our ‘Buddha’ statue he said that it was crying out for an Acer, so there will be a small circle between the two lawns for the two of them. We factored into our moving budget a good amount for the garden so he has been able to buy mature trees rather than plant saplings and allow them to grow; I know he has a silver birch for us which is already two metres tall.
It will be good to get it all done. I rather think that this will be the first in a weekly series of blips charting progress so I’ll add a unique tag; all things being equal it will probably be my Sunday blip for the next few weeks.
