New Year New Music

At this time of year Radio 3 presenters choose a favourite piece of new music and explain what it is about the piece that they like so much. (The whole programme is available on BBC Sounds.)

This morning Jess Gillam’s choice was played - In the Light of Air by Anna Thorvaldsdottir. This is the first movement: Luminance. And I thought of how I had watched the light reflected in the clouds as the sun rose this morning. This is music at its most elemental and is worth listening to, even if you decide in the end that it isn’t for you. I feel along with Jess that this is where music moves into another realm - out of this world.
