Lake Lure Vacation: Day 5 …

… Lake Lure to Brevard.

Whenever we vacation in Lake Lure we always, always, always take a trip to Brevard, NC to see the white squirrels!  Who wouldn’t!?!

But first we made a slight detour to see all the beautiful dahlias at Bullington Gardens.  This is actually where our blipmeet with MaryElizaR was supposed to be later this week but as I said yesterday there is nasty rain coming this way.

Mary had told us about this garden and since we had never been here before in all the years we’ve been coming to Lake Lure we decided to stop.  And boy are we glad!  I never knew how beautiful dahlias were!  There were hundreds of different varieties … all so gorgeous. Please see Extra photo for a small sampling. We were so impressed with this beauties that we have since ordered some bulbs to plant in our own garden.  We won’t get the bulbs until next spring but I’m looking forward seeing them bloom in the fall.

After spending loads of time at Bullington Gardens it was on to Brevard!  Our vacation here wouldn’t be complete without coming here. Our first destination once getting the Brevard is almost always Brevard College as that’s where we usually see the white squirrels. We took a quick drive through the campus but didn’t see any so it was on to nearby Franklin Park.  We saw a couple of squirrels here but not where I could get any decent photos.  Fortunately we know of another place that we’ve seen white squirrels … a nearby church yard.  White squirrel photographed! 

Once I got a decent enough squirrel photo we drove to the Pisgah Forest to visit Looking Glass Falls.  We wanted to do this today as tomorrow weather looks bleak. The forestry service had just reopened the access to Looking Glass Falls today.  It had been closed due to damage done by the recent hurricane that came through this area.  Sorry … can’t remember the name of it now several months later! Three of my pictures in the collage were taken here!  The lower right shows Richard helping a young lady and her dog with getting a picture of them in front of the falls.

From Looking Glass Falls we drove to the hotel we are staying in tonight and got checked in.  We had dinner at Brevard Diner and then visited Silvermont Mansion and Park to see their Halloween display.  Then back to the hotel for the night.
