Basking Butterfly

A beautiful day at last, and I went for a long walk to the farm shop, one way through the orchards and meadows, and back along the edge of the forest with its lovely old oak trees (see extra).

Imagine my surprise when I saw a red admiral butterfly flutter around the cherry trees and land on a tree trunk to bask in the sunshine.

I had read that they used to migrate south in the winters, but now they tend to overwinter here, due to the warming climate. But I have never spotted one at this time of the year before.
