Winter work
This morning we and six friends worked on our local wildlife area, clearing a lot of bramble, blackthorn and other scrub. We want to create more open areas for growing wildflowers which, in turn, will encourage more pollinators such as bees and other insects. I also planted out some primroses I had grown from seed last year. Our next job will be coppicing the small hazel copse which has grown phenomenally since it was planted as tiny whips sixteen years ago, and is now shading out most understorey plants.
We have always found it tricky creating and maintaining a variety of habitats, when doing so seems to require quite frequent and drastic pruning and removal of many plants, which feels "wrong". However, we are agreed we have to take the area in hand this winter in order to attract more wildlife next year.
Here is my husband admiring our pile of prunings.
