Geffrye Museum = Museum of Home

Today I visited the Museum of Home very near Hoxton Station. It was previously called the Geffrye Museum but was closed for refurbishment for a couple of years and has been renamed .

The Museum is housed in what were almshouses which were built from a legacy from Sir Robert  Geffrye in 1715. Geffrye was from a poor family originally but became a successful East India Merchant, he was the Master of the Ironmongers and became Sheriff of London and also Lord Mayor of London.

Because of his connections with the slave trade there have been many requests to remove his statue from the front of the building….however it is still there over the front door as seen in the blip. I presume this is also the reason for the name change.

Part of the museum is set up as rooms from different eras and at this time of year some have Christmas decorations from that era. See the two extras from 1912 and 1937.

We caught the 26 bus from Waterloo which was much more relaxing that two trains and also nice to go through the City of London and see more of the buildings there.
