Watching me watching you

Some mornings while we are out walking, , I see (and Bertie smells) deer nearby but, before I can fish out my phone from my pocket, they turn tail and run off over the horizon. This morning things were a bit different. The two deer knew that I was there but, instead of running off, they stood and stared in my direction. I extracted the phone from my pocket and slowly walked closer, all the time expecting the deer to run. Then Bertie picked up the scent and started huffing and puffing, as he does when unsure of something. The deer had obviously never heard anything like this before and were intrigued enough to stay where they were while Bertie and I got ever closer; close enough to see that there weren’t just two but in fact seven deer, one young male and the other six a mixture of females and young. Eventually, they decided that we were close enough and slowly turned and strolled away, turning to check what Bertie and I were doing, until we decided that it was time to head home for breakfast.
