Thanksgiving Cactus

My mother took a cutting from her mother's plant and grew this beauty. It has been in the family for over 75 years and many cuttings have been taken from it.  It's a Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumgera truncata) and is often confused with the Christmas Cactus (Schlumgera bridgesti).

They look much alike only the Thanksgiving Cactus flowers a month earlier than the Christmas Cactus....around Thanksgiving (thus the name...DUH!).

The leaves show a clear difference if you take the time to look closely. Check the Extra Photo: it clearly shows spikes on the terminal ends of the Thanksgiving Cactus. The leaves of the Christmas Cactus have projections that are more scalloped or tear-drop shaped without such pronounced spikes.

Comes in all sorts of colors which has nothing to do with which type it is: red, yellow, pink/white, white, orange and several hybrid colors.
