Shadow Shapes
I think it was the contrast that first caught my eye. Extreme dark shadows cast by tree trunks compared with a much lighter sky reflection. Big bold simple shapes. Then the scattering of willow leaves which serve to add interest to the dark, which might otherwise be overpowering.
It was a case of finding the arrangement of shapes and balance of dark/light. There is just enough sense of the third dimension, which is perhaps what sets a photograph apart in the visual arts.
