A Whiter Shade of Pale

This may look like a fairly scruffy airing cupboard interior, but you should have seen it this morning just after the hot water cylinder was removed. It was evident that the back wall (most of it, anyway) had never been painted in the 50 odd years this house has been standing! Well, that has now been rectified and the whole cupboard definitely looks a lot fresher. Of course, the main purpose of removing the hot water cylinder is so that the carpet fitters can get all the way into the cupboard with the new carpet tomorrow. When we had the whole heating/hot water system upgraded not long after we moved here, the carpets were pretty new so we didn’t change anything. Which means that the grubby piece of carpet I removed this morning had been down for at least 20 years, if not longer. Hopefully, by tomorrow night the hot water cylinder will be sitting on nice new carpet, which not only matches the rest of the room but actually goes all the way to the edges. The big bonus has been that we did not have to turn off the central heating as feared, so at least we can stay warm. But as we only have cold water, tomorrow mornings ablutions will be scanty to say the least.
Tomorrow is going to be like a a giant version of one of those puzzles where you try to create a picture but you can only move one piece at a a time. At the moment, the study is totally empty so they can start putting carpet down in there whilst we clear the bedroom furniture into the lounge. When the study is done, they can start on the bedroom whilst we move the contents of the lounge into the study and/or kitchen. Finally, the lounge can be carpeted whilst we rebuild the bed in the bedroom and the plumber refits the hot water cylinder.
That’s the plan anyway. The only part that can be sacrificed is carpeting the lounge. The study must be done as there is a massive piece of furniture arriving on Tuesday. And the bedroom must be done because I’m not spending the weekend (or longer!) without hot water. I’m keeping everything crossed…
