Two BanksiaMen ....
.... were seen today in the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra. The one on the left is the real thing: Sir Joseph Banks BT KCB FRS. He visited Australia with Captain James Cook on the Endeavour in 1770. Subsequently, in his role as President of the Royal Society of London, he encouraged research into the natural history of Australia. His name is given to the Australian plant genus Banksia.
The statue was presented in 1988 by the Australian Academy of Science and the Royal Society. It celebrates the contribution of Banks to the development of science in Australia and the continuing links between Australia and the UK in the plant sciences.
