Hong Kong Central Elevator.
Another action packed day. Jumped on the MTR from Kowloon to HK Island and enjoyed the trip up the Central-Mid-Level elevator. It's the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world - about 800m long/up - and consists of twenty escalators and three moving walkways - and it runs in one direction in the morning, and another in the afternoon. It was a fantastic way to get up the steep hill, it's nestled amongst lots of bars, shops, houses - where you can hop off and on, stop wherever you might fancy exploring further. I took this blip of one of the adjacent streets - I really do love all the signs protruding out in to the street, advertising everything from places to eat, sleep, get your feet done, jewellers - anything you can think of. And I really wondered where the lady with the plates was going.
I used it to get a good way up the island, and walked the rest of the way to the Botanical and Zoological gardens. There were lots of amazing and unusual trees & shrubs there, lots of which I didn't recognise and wouldn't be able to use back in the UK even if I did! There were quite a lot of animals to see as well - lots of monkeys, marmosets and orangutans.
Later in the evening I ventured further to the east of the island. Wandered through Charter Garden where tons of folk were just hanging out, chattering and doing nothing in particular - even though it was a damp (albeit warm) evening. Then caught the Peak Tram to....well...The Peak. It's a funicular railway which carries both tourists and residents to the upper levels of the island from Central district to Victoria Peak. It covers a distance of about 1.4 kilometres and a height difference of just under 400 metres, so pretty steep. The unfortunate thing when I got there was that it was so misty I could barely see the city skyline below. So not much opportunity for good photos, but an interesting trip nonetheless.
