LAKE WINNEBAGO

This is Lake Winnebago, the largest fresh-water lake in Wisconsin, exclusive of Lake Michigan. It is approximately 60 miles (96.6km) long and 20+ miles (32.2km) at it's widest.

It is basically a widening in the Fox River and has an average depth of only 15.5 feet (4.7m). Being so shallow, the winds can whip it up rather quickly and I have seen it go from glass calm to 6 foot (1.8m) waves in 15 minutes.

It is home to a world class fishery for many fresh-water fishes including walleye (Sander vitreus), a much sought after gastronomic delight and has the largest self-sustaining population of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) in the world. This fish can live over 100 years, exceed 7 feet (2.1m) in length and weigh over 200 pounds (90kg). It is a world source in the production of caviar (the roe of the sturgeon).

This view looks westerly in the southern portion of the lake near the City of Fond du Lac.
