Cartwheels

I was introduced to the music of Ward Thomas, about five years ago, by Radio 2 - Ken Bruce in particular. Their music is probably best described as “country with a British slant” but what makes it for me is their vocal harmonies. I don’t know if it’s because they are twins, but the sisters’ voices blend perfectly.
We have seen them a few times in concert and they really seemed to be going places, supporting James Blunt on his tour in 2019 and getting a credit on his single “Halfway”. Two years ago I saw that they were planning an “intimate acoustic” tour for 2020 and would be coming very close to Kendal, playing at Forum 28 in Barrow-in-Furness. Tickets duly purchased, I looked forward to the concert which would take place on 1st May 2020.
Except we all know that wasn’t going to happen after March! In fact, there were a couple of rescheduled dates along the way before we finally got to see them last night. But we weren’t alone in having waited so long - they asked how many of us had tickets for the original date, and a good three quarters of the audience stuck their hands up!
And although we were treated to some “intimate, acoustic” numbers at the beginning and end of the concert, they were joined by the band for a goodly part of it. Everybody really enjoyed it and there was a well deserved standing ovation at the end. The support acts weren’t bad either. I especially enjoyed the first chap who played a few of his own songs and had a nice line in banter in between the numbers. He finished with a rousing version of the old Willie Dixon/Rolling Stones number “Little Red Rooster”. Unfortunately, he had made the schoolboy error of not checking his flies before going on stage, prompting a comment in the bar during the interval “if he’d bounced around any more in that number, we’d all have seen his little red rooster!”
