Aberdeen Art Gallery

Today we took a drive into Aberdeen to visit the Art Gallery, which is a splendid building. Actually, there are a lot of great buildings in Aberdeen but this was the only one we went into (apart from a shopping centre) and it was pretty special inside, too. At least architecturally.

We had a bite to eat in the café and then took a wander around. There was a lot of nice stuff, but nothing that really grabbed me. I mean, I could see the talent that had gone into paintings and the subjects varied from nice portraits to bits of scenery but there was nothing I wanted to look at for more than half a minute, really.

At one point, the Minx made the observation that at the time most of these paintings were done, you'd usually need to be pretty wealthy to be a painter. The materials weren't cheap and, of course, you needed to have the luxury of time. Maybe that is why so many of them seemed technically proficient but not particularly exciting; it was more of a skill and a hobby than a passion..

Anyway, mustn't grumble; it was enjoyable enough and I did like the building. The view from the top floor in today's photo was probably my favourite bit.

By the time we left, it was getting towards being time to eat, and the Minx was determined to find a pub that wasn't too utilitarian. She came up trumps with The Cock and Bull at Balmedie, which involved a pleasant drive up the coast. My Extra fails to capture the natural beauty but it was lovely, as was the pub.
