2021 Sunday — View from Schooners

Late this afternoon we went to Schooners for an early dinner. We were actually going to go to Martin’s (pronounced mar-teens), but the power was out on their side of Ocean Avenue. So when we learned about the power-outage, we started our adventure.

Across the street and a block or two closer to the pier is the well known bar and restaurant: Schooners. Downstairs is their larger dining hall and upstairs is the small indoor bar and seating area and the patio dining. The upstairs has a great ocean view.

At first Mr. Fun thought we ought to sit in the downstairs dining room; then he changed his mind and said, “Let’s go upstairs and see if there is room at the bar.” Two empty stools were waiting for us.

So we cozied up to the bar, and immediately I was glad we had our big warm winter coats on because the bartender had her window that faces the waves open and the big entrance door from the patio dining area is always open; and a cold breeze was chilling the room.

The indoor bar was full of people; every barstool was occupied and all the little tables with seats along the wall behind us were being used because the sky was spitting rain on the patio area.

Within the first few minutes, we ordered our beverages and an hors d'oeuvre, and then we each ordered fish n’ chips (I had halibut and Mr. Fun requested the calamari; both were good). When we finished, I was stuffed.

We have never been bar frequenters, but I find a room full of people enjoying a drink and something delicious to eat to be a comfortable. Obviously folks just needed to get out of their own place to be with others. We have a lovely view from our house, so we didn’t need to get out to see; we wanted to get out to eat because since returning to the coast we have not yet grocery shopped.

Schooners was some place to be on a rainy gray Sunday about 4 o’clock.
