Fazzy Through The Looking Glass

My Dear Princess and Dear Friends,

I had such a lovely day today. I came home so happy. I spent much of today with Fazzy -

AGAIN. I KNOW YOU ARE READING THIS FAZZY.

Me and Fazzy had been talking about going to Te Papa for their surrealist art exhibition for some time. As you know, I know nothing about art, not really. But Fazzy is an extremely intelligent and cultured woman and she was keen to go. And I wanted to hear her thoughts.

I HOPE YOU ARE FEELING VERY SPESH, FAZZY.

What I was not expecting is what a hoot we would have. We ordered a wee snack before we entered the exhibit, and once again when my chocolate brownie arrived Fazzy peered at it and sniffed at it and looked at it, until I offered to trade with her.

"Oh no, I couldn't Symon!" she said. "Not again!"

Of course she HAD to. The fact that this was the second time just made it all the funnier to us.

I WANTED YOU TO HAVE THAT BROWNIE, FAZLYN.

The exhibit itself was amazing, with lots of interesting pieces that got us talking. And even if art doesn't make sense to me, chatting does. And so I appreciated these pieces for creating stimulating conversation. Our favourite piece was a massive construction of string with numbers embedded in it. We walked right through it, it was so huge (see extra). It was beautiful and interesting.

As for the majority of the art, I found it either very dark and unsettling or just incomprehensible. But Fazzy made it interesting for me, she didn't patronise and seemed genuinely interested in hearing my opinions and in trying to find something that didn't disturb me.

Magritte was more to my taste. I liked how his pictures challenge what we think reality is. In one picture, a man looks at himself in a mirror and sees the back of his own head. It was fascinating and confusing and puzzling and we both loved it.

In another room, they had set up a cute installation, with a camera and a projector that allowed you to look in a mirror and see the back of your own head. So that has to be today's blip.

Other things happened today, but they are of lesser importance. What makes me happy was getting to spend some time today with one of my very favourite people. I just love you, Fazlyn.

NOT LIKE THAT. DON'T BE DISGUSTING. YOU KNOW FINE WELL WHAT I MEAN, FAZZY.

S.
