Indigenous People's Day
I am happy to report that Oregon is one of the fourteen States in the USA that have eliminated Columbus Day from the calendar and have instituted Indigenous People's Day in its place. This change had not been explained to Bella and Evan at their school (which surprised me) but fortunately I was caring for them today, so I explained it to them and took them to a celebration involving Native American people instructing children (and interested adults) in weaving and bead-making, followed by an officially recognized Native American storyteller telling a creation story. (See extras.) Bella and Evan loved every minute of it, even though it took place outdoors and we all got very cold.
Evan's weaving instructor was a marvelous Lakota woman (who also has a degree in art from the University of Chicago) named Laura Campos. She later took off her mask so I could make a photograph of her, see Extras, and I include a photo of Bella making beads and the storyteller (who performed far enough away from the audience to not need a mask). He held an audience of about 30 people spellbound, despite the cold.
I am happy to say that at the moment I am enjoying a third day with no migraine. The plan is for me to care for Bella and Evan several days this week, so I'm very relieved to be, fingers crossed, migraine-free for now.
