Hopeful Portents
On This Day In History
1990: East and West Germany reunite after 45 years
Quote Of The Day
"In a gentle way, you can shake the world."
(Mahatma Gandhi)
Hard to believe, perhaps, that there was a brief period in the early '90's when things looked hopeful. Well, perhaps those times are returning. The danjiri matsuri (danjiri festival), which has been cancelled these past two years, has returned today. A thanksgiving festival, something like our harvest festival, this event culminates in these huge portable shrines, danjiri guruma, being raced around the streets, often resulting in damaged buildings. Rather them than me, on a hot day like this (says me, who went for a 22km run this morning.)
This photo was taken on my doorstep.
