The Big Smoke!
Had a brilliant family day out in London today, which included going to see 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie' - again! - at the Apollo Theatre.
If you don't know this show, it's based on the true story of a 16-year-old boy who wanted to be a drag queen and made national news at the time because his school refused to let him attend the prom in a dress. A documentary originally followed him as he prepared for the prom and this musical version has just come out as a film, too.
We first went to see it about three years ago and I couldn't believe it, the cast were wearing exactly the same uniforms as they did in the school where I was teaching at the time, right down to the tie, and their mouthy depictions of Year 11s were spot on. And, with several openly trans students at my school, it also unexpectedly proved to be a great way to show the students that a member of staff 'got it'.
It was certainly wonderful to be in a theatre audience again!
