Formica Aquilonia....

also known as the Scottish wood ant and found only in the cooler parts of of the country in our Highland pine forests. Their dome or nest as in the Extra is about 1 metre high containing around 100,000 workers and several queen's.
You can just about spot the ants in the main shot, was taken quickly by phone as camera back in menders after dropping it again, unf not in warranty this time.
