'Salford Firsts'

After an enjoyable walk in the unexpected sunshine, I arrived at Bexley Square for college, only to find it full of people and TV cameras. At first, I couldn't make out what was going on, but then I noticed the new sculpture. So, they hadn't been repairing water pipes! They'd been preparing for this.

I came out again during lunch break when the crowd had gone and my classmates and I could take a closer look. There is a QR code that forms part of the sculpture itself, which led to the artist's website and a page about the piece.

The horse itself represents "the first horse drawn bus service; the underground colliery and canal systems; and the first horse drawn tramway." But other features on the sculpture refer to local landmarks such as the Irwell, and Salford luminaries such as Emmeline Pankhurst, and LS Lowry.

I'm a big fan of public art and also of Bexley Square, so I'm delighted by this. And since Salford is often overshadowed, both literally and figuratively, by its neighbouring city, I'm glad to indulge in a bit of civic pride, too.
