The garden at Preston Hall near Pathhead south east of Edinburgh, is over 200 years old and was remodelled about 1885 employing about 15 full time gardeners then.  By the 1970s it had become too expensive to maintain and became derelict but then in 2011 Richard Edward volunteered to help to restore it and single handed started to clear the overgrown garden.  My blip taken two years later shows the sundial at the centre and some of the shrubs and trees that he had planted. Since then the hedges and trees have grown considerably and the garden is quite colourful.  On the northern wall is a walkway with two impressive octagonal gazebos, one having a room which was used as a place for the gentry to relax or view the garden and surrounding countryside. We enjoyed a scone and drinks sitting in the warm sunshine beside one of the partly restored Victorian greenhouses in which there are figs, peaches, nectarines and grapes. It really is a remarkable transformation thanks to the man who I think is still working voluntarily although he now has several helpers who have achieved wonders but it is an uphill task to keep it well maintained.
For those who live locally it is open tomorrow and Sunday and worth a visit
