Great Spotted Woodpecker ( Dendrocopos major )
The main event of the day was lunch at the North Lakes Hotel to celebrate Kanyl's "cough" year birthday. A great meal and it turned out all lunch bookings were getting a complimentary glass of "bubbly" so off to a good start. A very pleasant time was had in a well spaced out airy dining room.
The Great Spotted Woodpeckers have started visiting the feeders again. So they just had to be a blip. This is a this years youngster. The total red cap shows it is an immature bird. If it is male the next moult will reduce the red to just on the nape. A female loses all the red and has a black crown.
