Fort Clonque - Alderney.

Not quite so sunny today on my walk round the Burhou and Fort Clonque area of the island. Burhou ( part is just visible on the right of the photo) is an uninhabited
island which is an important breeding ground for puffins from May to July…so we have missed them this year.

Fort Clonque is the best of the mid-Victorian fortifications built to protect the Channel Islands from the French. Originally it was manned by 2 officers and 50 men. The Germans occupied it in WW2. 

It is reached by a causeway which cuts it off at high tide.

Accommodating up to 13 in several different buildings.
We rented it a while ago for one of my husbands significant birthdays and had a lovely few days with a group of friends. I have just checked availability and there is very little in 2021/2022! That is despite it costing several thousand pounds per week even in low season. We would like to stay there again so maybe I will think about it for 2023!
