Bye bye Don
It was probably around 1960/61 that I first heard the Everly Brothers. A lad who lived opposite me left school and joined the Merchant Navy. Each time he came home on leave, he'd bring some records back with him. His bedroom faced onto the street and when he opened the windows the sound of America would fill the air.
I heard Chuck Berry and Doo-wop before I even knew what it was. But it was the Everlys who changed everything for me; close harmony and melody. I got my first guitar Christmas 1961, learnt three chords and started singing. (I know a few more chords now).
It's no exaggeration to say that the Everly Brothers changed everything; I'm as happy listening to a Mozart duet, as I am to the Louvin Brothers or the Unthanks; harmony and melody.
RIP Don Everly 1931-2021
