Roughcastle tunnel
Travelled to Glasgow today via the Falkirk Wheel, that marvellous piece of engineering that transfers boats between the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal. It’s the world’s first and only circular boat lift.
At the top, where the Union Canal begins its journey to Edinburgh is Roughcastle tunnel which provided today’s colourful blip. It even outshone the extra which is of the Wheel in operation.
We did a circular walk from the Wheel along the Union Canal, joining the John Muir Way and travelling through the Calendar Estate. Lots of trails and information boards make this a very popular area for walkers and cyclists.
Lunch was taken at the Canada Woods Cafe, which was a revelation which we came across along the trail. Good food in pleasant surroundings.
The last part of the walk took us along the Antoine Way which follows the route of the Roman Antonine Wall. Walking in the footsteps of legionaries.
From there it was on to Glasgow to stay overnight with Susan’s nephew and the family. An energetic evening ensued with lots of games inside and out until it was bedtime. We’ll see them for a short time tomorrow morning before they leave for school.
