Tomatoes, tomatoes

What a wonderfully wet, dismal, cloudy, dull day. Plenty of rain to fill the butts and soak into the soil. No watering tonight. Such a delight to have the rain. I hope it’s not the end of summer and the beginning of autumn!

Such a contrast to the brilliant sunny day yesterday and, by all accounts, the weather system responsible is going to hang around for a few days spiralling in some gusty, strong winds. My description must cause a degree of hollow mirth to those who live in parts of the country who have suffered from the opposite of us in the soft, dry south.

That’s by was of an excuse for today’s blip, which is simply to record today’s tomatoes harvest. Some 4.5kg to add to the 7kg previously collected and several kg of tomatoes eaten for lunch. This is one of the best years ever, surprising seeing as a shortage of compost meant I mixed 50-50 of bought peat free and our own compost. It’s worked well and being here all summer has made a difference too.

The split tomatoes will be cooked to a thick rich sauce for later in the year. We had yet more tonight. I’ll dry some and fry some to have on toast. I also cooked a large bag of damsons, some to freeze, some to have with yoghurt tonight and some to make more damson jelly (hopefully a little more runny than the fruit leather stuff I made the other day!)
