Managed decline

I like to bring this out every now and again so that people don't forget that the UK's current government are complicit in the denigration of certain areas. This was from the late 80s and was, of course, kept secret under the OSA until about a decade ago.

That the mere thought that an entire region of England should be allowed to stagnate and rot - as official policy - should be enough to ban the Conservative party from power for all time. That they are currently lauding Thatcher (her 'environmental approach' to closing the coal mines, for example) is an indication that the current managed decline of the UK is not a figment of anyone's imagination.

I'll get back in my box now.

PS - for those interested, the link in Veronica's comment below is incredibly telling. It used to be the same with the Irish. And the French. And the Spanish. And the...

PPS - it's worth mentioning the Spectator article mentioned: https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/bigley-s-fate (you get one free view of a Spectator article, which is fine, as that is enough to last anyone a lifetime). One of the fat slug's final comments might well be appropriate as his own epitaph, for he is the chancer par excellence. One awaits with impatient relish.

"Mr Bigley might not have read the last entries in Captain Scott’s journals, but they have a resonance for him: ‘We took risks. We knew that we took them. Things have turned out against us. Therefore, we have no cause for complaint.’ Captain Scott’s mentality used to be the norm for chancers and adventurers."
